Ayurveda
Ayurveda is the traditional medicine of India, which originated there
over 5,000 years ago. Ayurveda emphasizes re-establishing balance in
the body through diet, lifestyle, exercise, and body cleansing, and on
the health of the mind, body, and spirit.(Devanatari : the
'science of life') is a system oftraditional medicine native toIndia,
and practiced in other parts of the world as a form ofalternative
medicine.InSanskrit, the word Ayurveda comprises the words ayu, meaning
'life' and veda, meaning 'sacredbooks'.Widely regarded as the oldest
form of healthcare in the world, Ayurveda is an intricate medical
system that originated in India thousands of years ago. The
fundamentals of Ayurveda can be found in Hindu scriptures called the
Vedas — the ancient Indian books of wisdom. The Rig Veda,
which was written over 6,000 years ago, contains a series of
prescriptions that can help humans overcome various ailments.Ayurveda
is the knowledge that indicates the appropriate and inappropriate,
happy and sorrowful condition of living, what is auspicious or
inauspicious for longevity, as well as the measure of life itself.
Ayurveda
is based on the premise that the universe is made up of five elements:
air, fire, water, earth and ether. These elements are represented in
humans by three "doshas", or energies: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. When any
of the doshas accumulate in the body beyond the desirable limit, the
body loses its balance. Every individual has a distinct balance, and
our health and well-being depend on getting a right balance of the
three doshas ("tridoshas"). Ayurveda suggests specific lifestyle and
nutritional guidelines to help individuals reduce the excess dosha.
A healthy
person, as defined in Sushrut Samhita, one of the primary works on
Ayurveda, is "he whose doshas are in balance, appetite is good, all
tissues of the body and all natural urges are functioning properly, and
whose mind, body and spirit are cheerful..."
What is 'Tridosha' or the Theory of Bio-energies?:
The three doshas, or bio-energies found in our body are:
Vata
pertains to air and ether elements. This energy is generally seen as
the force, which directs nerve impulses, circulation, respiration, and
elimination.
Kapha pertains to water and earth elements. Kapha is responsible for
growth and protection. The mucousal lining of the stomach, and the
cerebral-spinal fluid that protects the brain and spinal column are
examples of kapha.
Pitta pertains to fire and water elements. This dosha governs
metabolism, e.g., the transformation of foods into nutrients. Pitta is
also responsible for metabolism in the organ and tissue systems.
More than simply medical care,Ayurveda offers a philosophy whereby one
may prevent unnecessary suffering and live a long, healthy life. The
aim of this system is to prevent illness, heal the sick and preserve
life.
Different
Types of massages with descriptions
Abhyangam
In Ayurveda the Abhyangam massage is described as:
1. Jarahar
(anti aging) - If done daily to the spine, feet and head with sesame
oil, mustard oil or almond oil massage increases virility, vitality and
semen. The body is made up of seven tissue ingredients that are called
as Dhatu. Because massage is one practice, which provides energy,
vitality, and nourishment to all seven Dhatus and old age approaches
late, one remains young and energetic for longer duration. In this way,
massage is anti aging.
2. Shram
Har (fatigue reliever) - Fatigue is actually caused by physical and
mental strain. It affects the muscles and causes tensions. Rubbing,
patting and squeezing muscles gently removes fatigue.
3. Vata
Har (pacifies the Vata) - Constant strain on the nervous system from
Vata producing foods and anxieties disturb the Vata and one starts
having pain in the muscle and joints. Regular abhyangam massage with
Mahanarayana oil or oils prepared by burning garlic in heated oil, or
adding fenugreek seeds to boiling oil, mint oil and wintergreen oil all
help the troubles created by Vata.
4. Drishti
Prasad Kar (Improve sight) - Daily practice of abhyangam massage can
improve sight and reduces the risk of blindness. Those who have weak
sight or who suffers from diseases of the eyes should massage the feet,
especially under the big toe. They should also massage the spine, neck
and head regularly. This will remove eye troubles and improve vision.
5. Pushti
Kar (make one strong) - By increasing the circulation of vital life
fluids, and because of rubbing, pressing and kneading massage makes the
body strong, increases stamina, vitality and virility.
6. Ayu
Kar (provides longevity) - By creating an electrochemical balance,
massage helps in achieving longevity.
7. Swapna
Kar (induces sleep) - Massage relaxes the body and removes tensions.
Those suffering from sleeplessness, insomnia or those who are unable to
enjoy sound sleep should massage the body (especially the head and
feet) before sleeping. The use of oil in this case, especially oil from
pumpkin seeds, massaged on the head is very helpful. Brahmi oil is also
advised.
8. Twak
Dridh Kar (strengthens the skin) - Dryness of the skin is caused due to
dry climate, excess mental work, anxieties and constant worrying.
People who live in cold climates get dry skin by constantly facing the
chilled air, which creates dryness. Vata, by nature, is cold and dry
and its cold property is more active when there is a cold wave or cold
wind. The skin directly comes into contact with the external
atmosphere, and the skin also reflects like a mirror to the inner state
of the physical body. There are so many other factors that make skin
unhealthy like cosmetics of chemical origin, pollution etc. Massage
with oil remove dryness, which is first sign of disturbed Vata in the
body. Massage also makes the skin smooth and makes it shine. Regular
rubbing makes it strong.
9. Klesh
Sahatwa (provides resistance against disease and disharmony) - Massage
strengthens the seven ingredients of which the body is made up. These
antibodies provide more resistance to disease, and the strength, which
comes from the seven Dhatus, gives tolerance, forbearance, and
patience. This saves one from sorrows, agonies and anxieties.
10.
Abhighat Sahatwa (resistance to injuries & power to recover
quickly) - Those who massage the body regularly recover from physical
injury more quickly than other person who do not massage. Those who
massage regularly experience the healing process from within
immediately and they experience comparatively less pain and fewer
problems.
11. Kapha
Vata Nirodhak - Subsides ailments caused by Vata and Kapha.
12. Mrija
Varna Bala Prad - It maintains body strength, skin health and also
improves the color and texture of the skin.
Thus in
Ayurveda, abhyangam massage is highly praised and much emphasis is
placed on the use of oils in massage. However, you must note the above
are only guidelines for abhyangam and you should consult with a
qualified ayurvedic physician. How ever you must take this massage by a

Panchkarma!
Pancha in
Sanskrit stands for Five and Karma are therapeutic measures thereby
meaning five types of therapeutic measures. These are undertaken for
the purification of the body and Ayurveda considers it necessary before
the start of any other therapy. The logic being -as a cloth needs to be
purified or cleaned of impurities and dust before it can be imparted a
new color. Similarly the Body needs to be purified before it can be
imparted new colors of youthfulness, health and vigor etc. In fact,
most of the times, Panchakarma is an end in itself rather than a
prelude to other therapeutic measures.
The
Panchakarma therapy of Ayurveda comprises of five basic types of
advanced treatment for evacuation of vitiated Dosha (toxic materials)
from the body. One can consider this as a cleansing program of toxins
from the body. There are so many subtypes of this therapy and different
types of herbal massages, fomentation's like steam, external oil
treatments, Basti (medicated enemas), Virechana (purgation through
herbs), Vamana (emesis through herbs), Nasya (nasal administration of
oils) etc. are incorporated. These practices are extremely helpful in
relieving deep seated diseases as well as it is also beneficial for
maintaining and improving physical and mental health.
According
to Ayurveda, every human being is a unique phenomenon of cosmic
consciousness. The three Dosha (humors) determines every
individual’s psychosomatic temperament or constitution. Vata
(ether plus air), Pitta (fire plus water) and Kapha (water plus earth)
are called the Tridosha, meaning the three Dosha. The internal
environment is governed by Vata -Pitta -Kapha (V-P-K), which is
constantly reacting to the external environment. The wrong diet,
habits, lifestyle, incompatible food combinations (e.g. milk and fish,
melons and grain, yogurt and meat or cooked honey etc.), seasonal
changes, repressed emotions and stress factors can all act either
together or separately to change the balance of V-P-K. According to the
nature of the cause, Vata, Pitta or Kapha undergo aggravation or
derangement that produces Ama (toxins). To stop the further production
of Ama Ayurvedic literature suggests putting the person on a proper
diet with appropriate lifestyle, habits and exercise, and administering
a proper cleansing program such as Panchakarma.
Panchakarma
is a very special Ayurvedic operation requiring proper guidance from a
highly trained and skillful Ayurvedic practitioner. One should consult
with an Ayurvedic physician, not just someone with a modest amount of
training prior to deciding for these cleansing procedures. Panchakarma
is done individually for each person with their specific constitution
and specific disorder or need in mind, thus it requires close
observation and supervision.
It is
recommended for healthy persons also as a preventive treatment to keep
physically and mentally fit and energetic. It is also done to best
advantage, although not always, at the junction period between two
seasons, thus helping a person to prepare their internal environment
for the oncoming season.
